The Dance Academy's good decks guide relocates to the Cooperage as their annual Search for a DJ contest begins…
The beat is on at The Cooperage tomorrow night as the opening round of The Dance Academy's annual Search for a DJ competition gets under way.
For the first time, the hotly-contested event has been moved from the Union Street club to The Cooperage, now run by the team behind The Dance Academy.
Over the next month, the bar area of the Barbican venue will be buzzing with mixes from around. 50 DJs from as far a field as Finland, who are all vying for a year-long residence at The Dance Academy.
They will each spend up to 40 minutes on the decks demonstrating their talents. The latter stages of the competition will then move to The Dance Academy where the finalists will be judged.
Dance Academy promoter and resident DJ Tom Costelloe said: "It's very much a competition to try to get the DJs off the ground. This time we are going to do it slightly differently. For the last two years we have narrowed the entries down and put them into heats at The Dance Academy. This year we are going to give everyone who sends in a demo a shot at playing at The Cooperage."
A handful of DJs are expected to take part in the first round of the competition tomorrow night, with regular heats to follow on Thursdays and Fridays.
While they warm up the decks at The Cooperage, Guy Alexander and Damien James - both veterans of the DJing competition - will be at The Dance Academy for the residents DJs' Battle for Pride event.
Throughout the night, the club's DJs will take it in turns to bring their beats to the main room in a battle for glory.
The Eyecon Residents Battle for Pride includes Tom Costelloe, Damien James, Tommy Quick, Guy Alexander, Greg Zizique and Rich Wright.
The night runs from 10.30pm until 8am, and costs £10 before 11pm and £12 after. The DJ competition at The Cooperage runs from 8.30pm. Entry is free.
